MBA Abroad - Index Post

Many of my friends have been asking me very pertinent questions related to MBA from US. I thought it would be useful for everyone if I could write the most common set of questions. Thanks to Kopos and others, who detailed me the basic outline, here is my first article on various topics, which is a basic index. Feel free to mail me in case I miss out any particular topic.

  • International MBA versus Indian MBA – I
  • Differences in Preparation – Overview of preparation for US MBA . - II
  • Calendar for Preparing for US MBA - III
  • Preparing for GMAT - IV
  • Planning your career goals – IV
  • Starting the application procedure – Short listing schools – V
  • Pruning them in depth – Finer aspects of schools - VI
  • Resume preparation - VII
  • Writing the first set of essays - VIII
  • Recommendations - IX

Dont be surprised to see the "Preparing for GMAT" and "Planning your career goals " have the same numbers. It is best if you can prepare for GMAT while at the same time take off time to you’re your career and short list the schools.

Before you go on and read these articles, a word of caution. These have been written to the best of my knowledge and in no way unquestionable. Let me update my profile so that you read all the stuff and realize that I have just applied (and god forbid, dinged by all the universities) and chose not to rely on an amateur’s advice. I am currently waiting for my results, so you probably want to check my results before wading through :)

Thanks to “D” for these set of posts,
http://www.pagalguy.com/index.php?categoryid=8&p2_articleid=65, authored by Sowmya alias Simbha, answers most of the questions in the outline, easing my job to a large extent. In case of differences or on topics that I believe need more detail or has not been covered, I will post here. In the remaining instances, I will include suitable links.

A really helpful blog.. Gr8 to see that our almuni is actually working srsly upon helping the IIITians :-)

Ma'm, it'll be of help if you cud add the following information in one of the topics in here:

1) What kind of job experience would be best to make our profile attractive:
- Do we go for startups or do we prefer big names?
- Do we go for better brand names or do we go for better work?

2) What could highlight the profile in particular? Do memberships such as those with TiE, ToastMasters club etc help? What in particular do we keep in mind when in jobs?

3) WHat is the most appropriate time to write GMAT? Shud I go for it immediately after final year or do I wait for another year or 2?

4) How could are the chances of getting an admission after 2 years? How abt 3 years?

I actually have a whole set of doubts but am expecting to get them all cleared through the series of posts that'll be published in ur blog :-) Gr8 effort, I must say..

Kiran, there is no min-cg required.. Its the overall personality that matters.. Not hat CG is not important, it is, but its part of academics and academics is one side of your personality. The fewer years of experience you have, the more the weight of CG on your application. Its again relative and depending on the standard of the university where you did your studies... Also, depends on schools.. Some univs such as Michigan (Ross) for example require good quantitative skills. So they verify your grades particulary Math related ones...

Ak-84,

Your questions remind me that I need to add one more addition to the series of my posts. Good to see your plan for future... I will go in detail in a post definitely, because this would be a common set of questions for those aiming for an MBA. But here are the concise answers..

1. Either startups or big companies, you need to show you have done qualititative good work. The question rather here is not small or big companies, but is the role challenging? is it interesting to you which motivates you to take up higher responsibilities? Good if you have some brand name associated. But do not compromise on quality of work for brand name. For example, when I came to my company ( a startup, now been acquired by a big company ), I had the advantages both sides. My company was small but a leader in a niche field and I could take up several responsibilities at the same time deal with several high profile clients.

The question to be asked is : Is there enough growth in the role? Is it challenging? How is the career path like? How is the learning curve ( not just technical stuf.. )

2. Take up leadership roles and roles onsite etc.. ( international expereince is given a lot of weightage ). The membership in these do help, but they see how well you participate and how deeply you are involved..

3. GMAT is valid for 5 years. I would say, if you have time go for it at the end of the final year. Because once you start on your job, it becomes difficult to spend so much time. Added to it, you are in the spirit of cracking several exams then, so you will require less prep for this....

4. Again, it depends on quality. Avg age for US MBA is 5, while European goes around 7 ( not sure ). So if you are aiming for 3, you need to prove you have good maturity levels and can contribute to the class too. ( besides being able to follow what your batchmates say).

I hope some of these will get cleared with other posts. But I will update the list by including one more for freshers, just out of college. Thanks for mentioning this topic.

Feels good to see such a great enthusiasm...
