Consultation for MBA apps?

Gave my gmat - now should start the process of applications. Two years ago, while I was searching for sites that would help me in preparing my resume, stumbled upon a site that was established by Harvard alumni and charged $100 an hour. I was sceptical if they had enough clients! Now, I realise there may be many clients. :) Considering myself to be a hater of wastage of money, I am not so averse to the idea of takign the help of consultants.

A very important question is you need to differentiate between other people esp in the top colleges - Wharton - 6000 applicants for 800 vacancies, Stanford - 5000 for 360 seats!

Assumptions:
1. Verify the proper information that the consultancy agency is good. Has good track record. Any assurance that they give?

Verify that if the students had not gone with the consultation agency, would they have not gotten admission? It might be that the students they accept to consult are highly qualified more or less suitable for the top 5 schools, in which case, it might not be worth spending the amount.

cons:
1. The cost factor .

Pros:
1. Good strategic consulting - can put the best foot forward.
2. May even get scholarships - thus the cost paid for the consultation becomes negligible.
3. May get admissions into top colleges - worth the cost?

Now the summary, I need to ask myself -

What is the best college that I can get withotu any help from the consultation?

Is the consulting agency track record good with candidates who have a profile similar to my profile?

What would be the improvements in terms of the best college ( will I be able to get in better colleges ) that I can get into after taking the consultation?

Will I be able to get scholarship in the colleges?

Let me go through the list of consultancies available and go through them.
